The
compact pulsed power system is based on technology developed at Sandia
National Laboratories (The Z Accelerator).
Only
three compact pulsed power machines are in operation worldwide with two
systems based in the United States. One is housed at Sandia
National Laboratories (Albequerque, New Mexico) and the other housed
here at the Institute for Shock Physics.
This
facility has several unique features. It is used for the
examination of a sample's response(s) to shockless, high pressure
loading. It enables researchers to obtain material response data
in a single experiment (versus multiple experiments with traditional
methods). The dynamic response of two to four materials can also
be obtained in a single experiment.
The
compact pulsed power facility permits:
• Rapid performance optimization
• Reduced cost of developing novel materials
• Basic material studies
